Special Prosecutor to Look at Petersburg Election
In Petersburg, a special prosecutor is investigating several allegations of misconduct on Election Day.
Commonwealth’s Attorney Cassandra Conover said that while most of the complaints are fairly minor, there are a couple that are more serious and she wants to avoid any appearance of impropriety.
The Board of Elections wrote to Conover last week, asking for her to see if charges ought to be filed. There could, she told the Progress Index, be criminal charges and fines or nothing at all; it’ll be up to the special prosecutor.
The most serious allegations involve Marion Werkheiser and Dale Pittman. A letter claims Werkheiser “assisted a voter” inside the Ward 5 polling place. She claimed she was authorized by the Democratic Party, but her authorization turned out to be bogus.
The other problem, also in Ward 5, is a claim that Pittman was trying to relay information via smart phone to someone outside of the polls before the official results were completed.
