One-day, One-stop Service For Homeless
Several hundred homeless people lined up at the Richmond Convention Center yesterday for the one day of the year set aside especially to take care of them Charles Fishburne reports.
There are always homeless, and there are many people and agencies and organizations to help. But rarely do they all come together, in one day, in one place, to do it right now.
Dickinson: They're coming in here with needs that need to be done today.
Dr. Terry Dickinson is Executive Director of the Virginia Dental Association.
Dickinson: For the amount of pain that they're in, I mean, all you gotta look at their faces and you can tell.
Dr. Dickinson and his associates will treat 150 homeless people before this day is over; they are part of Project Homeless Connect that matches clients with volunteers to offer as many services as possible, all in one day.
Dickinson: It's kind of one-stop for the homeless population.
More than 40 service providers move their operations to a single location for a day to try to eliminate some of the barriers people experience when they need help.
