Two Dead In I-77 Accident
Two people are dead and 16 others injured, four critically, following multiple crashes on fog-shrouded I-77 in Southwest Virginia yesterday. Charles Fishburne reports.
Fifty vehicles piled up in multiple crashes on I-77 just north of the North Carolina border.
Geller: The visibility is just a matter of feet.
Corinne Geller, Virginia State Police.
Geller: Tractor-trailers, several of these jackknifed and overturned onto their sides. The cause is severe fog. The Fancy Gap area there along I-77 is known to get really thick, thick walls of fog.
I-77 South was shut down all day as rescue workers tried to transport the 20 injured people to hospitals.
Geller: And it's raining out there and, of course, with darkness is compounding the situation.
To make matters worse, two northbound tractor-trailers jackknifed as evening approached, and I-77 was completely shut down, north and south, for several hours.
Geller: In order to make sure that the interstates are safe for motorists, but also for all the emergency responders, wrecker operators and state troopers out there working these crashes.
