Downing Bridge Being Repaired
The Downing Bridge over the Rappahannock River desperately needs repair. The price tag approaches $5 million.
The bridge was built in the early sixties and has been deemed structurally deficient for a number of years now.
A Virginia Department of Transportation report says the bridge must be regularly monitored and maintained, but it's not necessarily unsafe. That report rates it at 35 out of 100 points for overall sufficiency. $4.6 million dollars in repairs over 18 months are being done by a firm from Maryland that specializes in bridge restoration, and anything that closes down a lane will be done in off-peak travel times.
Richmond County Administrator Bill Duncanson told the Northern Neck News funding for the bridge will not come from the county’s road maintenance budget.
