FTC Says Fake Check Scams on the Rise
There is a new anti-fraud campaign set to be launched in Virginia today, to protect consumers from check fraud…Charles Fishburne reports.
If the letter or the email says, “It’s your lucky day," don’t believe it.
At a news conference later today, the Virginia attorney general’s office, the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer services, the Virginia Credit League, the Virginia Bankers Association and the Consumer Federation of America will all be on hand to launch an educational program to help protect consumers and financial institutions from fake check scams.
Although they are not releasing information in advance, the federal trade commission warns that counterfeit or fake checks are being used in a growing number of fraudulent schemes, including foreign lottery scams, check overpayment scams, internet auction scams and secret shopper scams.
Later today, participants in the anti-fraud program are expected to explain how some of the scams work and how you can protect yourself from them.
