Federal Aid Offered To Repair Drought Damage
Federal aid is being offered in five Virginia counties to repair conservation damage on farmland caused by drought. Charles Fishburne reports.
About 110 thousand dollars will be provided to producers in Goochland, Louisa, Albemarle, Bath and Fluvanna counties from the Emergency Conservation Program, to remove debris, repair conservation structures, restore fences, grade and shape the land and implement emergency water conservation measures.
But that’s just the physical damage; late last month, preliminary figures indicated Virginia farmers took a major hit in actual crop production with corn down 59%, soybeans 37%, peanuts 19%, alfalfa, hay and cotton, 17% each, due to the long, dry summer of 2010.
