5th District Candidates in Televised Forum Tonight
One of the nation's most closely watched congressional races is coming up in Virginia's 5th District. Jeanne Faulconer tells us the Democratic and Republican candidates will face off tonight in a joint televised appearance.
Incumbent 5th District Congressman Tom Perriello and State Senator Robert Hurt will participate in a televised candidate forum on WSLS-TV in Roanoke at 6 pm tonight. Congressman Perriello, the Democrat who was elected in 2008 by a narrow margin, is being challenged by Senator Hurt, the Republican who served six years in Virginia's House of Delegates before being elected to the state senate in 2007. Tonight's candidate forum is being characterized as a round table discussion, a kind of Meet the Press format, rather than a formal debate with timed responses and rebuttals.
The candidates will face one another in more typical televised debates October 19 in Charlottesville and October 21 in Danville, with nonbroadcast debates scheduled for October 27 in Lynchburg and October 29 in Martinsville.
Much of Virginia's Fifth District is out of reach for broadcast of tonight's televised candidate forum. WSLS-TV has said it will stream tonight's event live on its website at 6 pm.
