Earthquake Shakes Area North of Richmond
The U.S. Geological Survey says a minor earthquake was centered about 20 miles north of Richmond late Saturday afternoon.
The USGS said on its website that the quake was felt in Richmond, in Charlottesville, and 339 miles away in Canton, North Carolina.
There have been no reports of damage or injuries. Survey Geophysicist Dale Grant said a magnitude of 3.0 on the Richter scale was measured at 4:17 in the afternoon. He added that the small earthquake is “not totally unusual” for the state; there have been others in the same area before.
