Truck Stopped on 288 Struck by Vehicle, Traffic Snarled

An wreck just before 9:30 Tuesday morning tied up traffic on southbound Route 288 for hours.

The wreck happened on the James River Bridge about a mile and a half south of Route 6.

Molnar:  Virginia Waste Services trash truck stopped partially on the left shoulder and partially in the left lane of travel to retrieve a bag of trash that the trash truck had dropped in the middle of the roadway.

Molnar:  While the driver of the trash truck was attempting to exit his vehicle, a second vehicle, a 1999 Land Rover, which was also travelling in the left lane, struck that trash truck, causing serious injury to the Land Rover's driver.

56 year-old Gregory Briehl, from Earlysville, was seriously injured and flown by State Police Med-flight to the VCU Medical Center. Investigators say he was wearing a seatbelt.

Molnar:  The driver of the trash truck, Ricky Howell, age 46, from Henrico, has been charged with reckless driving and also charged with improper stopping.
