Energy Star Tax Holiday
Virginia’s fourth annual sales tax holiday on Energy Star and WaterSense products will run from Friday October 8th through Monday October 11th.
The tax holiday is designed to encourage Virginia consumers to go green. Applicable tax-free products must cost 2500 dollars or less and be purchased for noncommercial or personal use.
Applicable Energy Star products include air conditioners, refrigerators, dishwashers, ceiling fans and washing machines, as well as compact fluorescent bulbs and programmable thermostats. WaterSense-labeled sink faucets, faucet accessories, showerheads and toilets will also be tax-exempt.
Joel Davison is the spokesperson for the Virginia Department of Taxation.
Davison: It’s a very smart choice to go out and replace your energy-sucking appliances with energy-efficient appliances to save the sales tax, and so you’re saving five percent right away. You’re saving money for years to come by using less energy to run these appliances.
There is also a separate federal tax credit available for qualifying appliances up to 1500 dollars, for up to 30 percent of the cost.
Guidelines, frequently asked questions and a list of approved Energy Star and WaterSense products are available on the Department of Taxation’s website: www.tax.virginia.gov.
