Science Matters: UVa Researchers Will Develop “Smart Building”
download
The National Science Foundation has announced an important grant at the University of Virginia.
UVA researchers will get $2 million to develop “smart ” energy systems for both homes and commercial buildings.
The four-year grant will fund work that focuses on reducing the energy used for heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems.
The plan, the University says, is to develop sensors and user interfaces that will make it possible for people to have more control of building temperatures. They’ll also be designing new systems to improve efficiency and speed.
The U.S. Energy Information Office says HVAC systems account for about 28% of the electricity that’s used every year in this country.
