Coliseum Study Recommends Four City Sites
An independent study group has located four sites in or near downtown Richmond for a replacement for the aging Richmond coliseum. Charles Fishburne reports.
Four sites were mentioned in a press briefing, including renovating the current Coliseum as one possibility; that’s at East Leigh Street. The others sites include the adjacent property now occupied by the Public Safety building and an adjoining parking lot, the Diamond property along North Boulevard and the Virginia ABC warehouse on Hermitage.
The $150 thousand dollar study was commissioned in the summer and should be completed in November, but so far Barrett Sports Group LLC says they have found public support for either renovating the old Coliseum or building a new one, but they haven’t asked anybody how they would pay for any of it yet.
The Coliseum study group consists of private corporations, as well as the city and surrounding counties. The Richmond Coliseum was built in 1971.
