JetBlue to Stop New York Service
The cost of air travel from Richmond to New York could increase substantially in the coming months, as low-cost carrier JetBlue announced it plans to end its daily flights to JFK, November 1st. Charles Fishburne reports
Before low-cost carriers came to Richmond, RIC was one of the nation’s most expensive airports to fly anywhere.
Bell: You could see fares prior to the arrival of Jet Blue to New York that could push seven or eight hundred dollars on round-trip for last-minute purchase.
Troy Bell, Richmond International.
Bell: The last-minute to JFK on Jet Blue might be $180.
It was a dramatic turnaround that could now flip again.
Bell: We suspect that they will go up; we don't know how quickly or how much.
Three other carriers will still fly to New York. None is low-cost, though Jet Blue did tend to keep a cap on prices in general. The company says the Richmond market was underperforming for them and it was, until recently.
Jet Blue will still fly RIC to Boston, Fort Lauderdale and Orlando, but whether it means the end of cheap seats to New York…
Bell: It really is a different game.
