Virginia State University’s High Tech Business School

Virginia State University has signed a deal with Flat World Knowledge, Inc. to provide electronic version of textbooks to the Reginald F. Lewis School of Business.

The textbooks can be read on everything from personal computers to iPads and Kindle readers.  The agreement also allows for the texts to be available in other popular formats, including audio, Digital Accessible Information System or DAISY, and Braille Ready Format.

The electronic texts are cheaper than hard bound books, which can cost students a thousand dollars or more each year.  VSU will cover the start up costs and, the school adds, it will explore other options to eventually transfer the license costs to students.  Dr. Mirta Martin, dean of the business school, told the Progress Index students often fall behind because they’re unable to afford textbooks.
