Scott On Unemployment
Virginia’s 3rd District U.S. Congressman Bobby Scott was in Richmond yesterday visiting small businesses and speaking with business owners about their challenges in a difficult economy. Craig Carper reports.
Addressing the small business owners at Weezie’s Kitchen in Carytown, Democratic Congressman Bobby Scott spoke of his support for extending unemployment benefits.
Scott: Studies have been done and the conclusion is that extending unemployment benefits is the best thing that the government can do in terms of stimulating the economy. Every dollar you put into that stimulates the economy to the tune of about $1.70, $1.90, somewhere in there.
Scott said small businesses will be crucial to rebuilding the national economy.
Scott: Most of the new jobs in the American economy are small business jobs. When somebody sets up a small business, if it’s successful, you're talking 1,2,3,5,10,25 jobs.
Local business owners shared their concerns with Scott about lending freezes at banks around the country and increasing service fees from credit card companies.
