Money is Still Available for Cooling Help

The deadline to apply for 2010 cooling assistance is next Monday…and as Charles Fishburne reports, even though many have applied, there is still money left for those who need it.

Last year, 70,000 people were helped by the Department of Social Services and this year, the total could be even higher.

Gregg:  We have had an increase in requests for assistance, but there is some money still available and again, we would encourage everyone who thinks they need some assistance to apply by Monday.

Spokesperson Andrea Gregg.

Gregg:  Households can receive assistance paying their electric bill, they can receive assistance with a security deposit for electricity; if you do not have any cooling equipment in your home, you may be eligible to receive one window air conditioner or a whole-house fan or an attic fan, or repairs to your existing heat pump, et cetera.

To receive cooling assistance, a household must include a child under six, a disabled individual or an adult 60 or over, and meet income and eligibility requirements.  Go to dss.virginia.gov or any of the state's 120 local social services offices.
