FBI Launches Nationwide Campaign to Catch “Granddad Bandit”
The FBI has set its sights on a bank robbery suspect they call the “Granddad Bandit,” who began his crime spree in Richmond…and as Charles Fishburne reports, will soon be featured on digital billboards across the country.
Who would imagine Granddad robbing banks?
Rybiski: Never does he try and hide his identity.
Dee Rybiski, Richmond FBI.
Rybiski: He comes into the bank very calmly, he doesn't draw attention to himself, a lot of times he waits patiently in line.
He looks and acts like a few million other guys: white male, 40 to 60, grey hair, balding, tall, maybe six feet or more.
Rybiski: And when he approaches the teller, he gives him or her a note demanding money.
Never makes a threat or displays a gun.
Rybiski: Very non-descript, when he gets out on the street he blends in perfectly.
But the FBI says Granddad robbed three banks in Virginia before heading cross country, where he is now suspected of robbing 25 banks in 13 states. Soon, his picture and MO will be plastered on digital billboards across the country, and before anybody begins to regard him as some kind of sympathetic figure, the FBI reminds us:
Rybiski: He's committed a crime. Thank goodness he's not hurting anybody.
