Hanover Teenager Pleads Guilty in Ax Attack on Schoolmate

A Hanover County Teenager has pleaded guilty to attacking another student with an ax and will spend a minimum two years at a juvenile correction facility. As Charles Fishburne reports, the plea agreement spared the 16-year old a possible life prison sentence.

Surveillance video shows 16-year old Omar Abdelaal and his friends walking into the Tractor store across the street from Lee Davis High school; shortly after, a schoolmate, Austin Mayton, and his friends follow them in.

Abdelaal claims Mayton had been bullying him and threatening him.  The video then shows Abdelaal walking away from his alleged tormentors and coming back with an ax and swinging the blade into Mayton’s face, which ultimately took more than 100 stitches.

In court yesterday, Abdelaal apologized to the victim, the victim’s family and his own family.  Under the plea agreement, he pled guilty to malicious wounding, a lesser charge resulting in a minimum two years at a juvenile correctional facility, plus 20 more on probation.
