Small Plane Skids, Shuts Down Runway for Four Hours

Richmond International’s runway 2/20 is back to normal this morning, after a small plane lost a landing gear and crash landed about two o’clock yesterday afternoon…

The plane came to rest just off the side of the runway.

Bell:  After the crash, the airplane skidded nearly 600 feet off the side of one of the runways here.

Troy Bell, Richmond International

Bell:  The runway is fairly close to the terminal building; it's one that parallels the entire terminal, so some folks had nearly a front-row seat; but in terms of disrupting operations, it did not.

State police identified the pilot as 53-year-old John Peedin of Littleton, North Carolina, who was travelling here on business.  He was not hurt; the plane had minor damage.  The runway was closed for several hours, but finally cleared, inspected and reopened at six last night.
