Remains Found In Upper Appomattox Canal

Skeletal remains have been found in the Upper Appomattox Canal near the site where a missing man’s ATV was located in the winter.

The Dinwiddie Sheriff’s Office decided to take advantage of the low water in the canal and take another look for 27-year-old Gerald Marion.

Knott:  In the period of time that Mr. Marion's been missing, we've done a number of searches, ground searches with officers, with dogs, with dive teams, cadaver dogs.

Sheriff’s Department Captain William Knott explained that Marion was reported missing February the 9th.

Knott:  Mr. Marion had ridden off that night on a three-wheel ATV-type vehicle and had not returned; the next morning, the search worked its way down towards this canal.  We found this three-wheeler upside-down in the canal.

The Upper Appomattox Canal, he said, is actually dry in some places these days because of the weather and the collapse of a dam that fed water into it.  Another search was done Saturday and remains and other personal items were found. The Medical Examiner will determine identity.
