A Stretch of 295 Becomes Virginia’s First 70 mph Highway
The first 70 mile-an-hour speed limit in Virginia goes into effect today on a section of Interstate 295, but as Charles Fishburne reports, higher limits could come to hundreds of miles of Virginia interstates.
There is a ceremony in Prince George County today to usher in 70 mile-an-hour speed limits in Virginia.
Eishen: As of today, the speed limit on part of Interstate 295 is 70 miles per hour.
Dawn Eishen at VDOT. The first 70 mile an hour road is 295 between the I-95 interchange in Prince George and the Route 60 interchange in Henrico.
Eishen: This is in response to House Bill 856 and Senate Bill 537 that increases the maximum allowable highway speed limit to 70 miles per hour on certain highways after VDOT conducts a traffic engineering study.
There are 741 more miles of eligible interstate in Virginia, including more of 295, 95 and 64 in this area. Eishen says the General Assembly approved the increase because most traffic was doing that anyway, and it was deemed safer for everybody to be traveling at the same posted limit.
