DSS Offers Summer Cooling Assistance
With the first full week of summer coming up, the Virginia Department of Social Services is once again offering cooling assistance for people who need it. Charles Fishburne reports.
The program has grown rapidly in the last decade, and last year some 70,000 people received financial help in keeping cool.
Gregg: We have some really uncomfortable, warm days ahead of us.

Gregg: It’s not a luxury. Staying cool during the summer months is a health concern. We just want people to know that we have this program available to assist them in keeping their homes in a comfortable and healthy temperature.
Assistance is available to households that include a child under age six, or a disabled individual, or an adult age 60 or over who meet income and eligibility requirements. They can pay up to $100 on energy bills, pay security deposits, help pay for repairs, buy an air conditioner or whole house fan, and more. Applicants can go to their local social services department or online [at www.dss.virginia.gov] to see if they qualify.
