Special Election Results
The state Republican party retained both House of Delegates seats in special elections yesterday. Craig Carper reports.
In March Governor Bob McDonnell appointed Republican Delegate Sam Nixon of Chesterfield as the new Chief Information Officer of the Virginia Information Technology Agency and in April appointed Republican Delegate Matt Lohr of Harrisonburg, Commissioner of Agriculture and Consumer Services.
Both Republican candidates for the vacated seats handily defeated their Democratic opponents. Tony Wilt of Harrisonburg defeated Democrat Kai Degner with 65% of the vote and Roxann Robinson, of Chesterfield, defeated Bill Brown with 72% of the vote.
Robinson campaigned as an everyday citizen and outsider to the political process. Last night she said she would have much to learn between now and the next General Assembly session.
Robinson: I’ve had many phone calls from the House of Delegates and I have lots of ears that I can go and bend and ask questions to and hopefully I’ll have myself up and running and they can give me some guidance.
Turnout for special elections is typically lower than November elections. In the Harrisonburg race 24% of registered voters came to the polls, while in Chesterfield only 9% percent cast their vote.
