Governor’s School Featured in Newsweek
Once again, The Maggie Walker Governor’s School for Government and International Studies has been recognized by Newsweek Magazine in its ranking of American high schools.
For the fifth year in a row, Maggie Walker has been named one of the “nation’s most selective schools.” School Director Fred Morton says “when you put together extremely gifted students, a talented faculty, and a challenging curriculum, amazing things can happen.” Twenty schools are excluded from the list of the 1600 top U.S. high schools, Newsweek noted, because of their “sky-high SAT and ACT scores” which indicate they have few or no average students. The only other Virginia school listed is Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, in Arlington.
The Governor’s School draws about 700 students from 12 school districts. Morton pointed out, the students selected for the Maggie Walker program are more than smart, they are risk takers who leave their comfort zone ready to be challenged.
