Virginia Dept. Of Taxation Recognized for Teleworking Efforts

The Virginia Department of Taxation has received national recognition for its pioneering, and successful efforts at teleworking. Charles Fishburne reports.

Out of about 1100 employees at the Department of Taxation over half do some or all of their work from home.

Krogh:  They love that they have no commute.

Julianne Krogh is Telework Coordinator for the Virginia Department of Taxation, which has been the state’s vanguard agency transferring work to home.

Krogh:  They can spend more time with their family and friends.

With telework, Virginia can set up shop anywhere.

Krogh:  [Inaudible] to close all of our district offices, most of them in 2011 and the last one here in 2010.

Danville has a program.  Northern Virginia workers don’t have to fight traffic.  And it’s no surprise recruitment and retention of workers is easier.

Krogh:  People have been working from home for decades and we just realized at the State level that we can allow our employees to work from home as well.

Tax Commissioner Janie Bowen won the “Driver” award.  The leadership award went to the agency at the Telework Exchange’s annual awards ceremony in Washington.
