A Coal Mine Proposal is Challenged

Environmentalists are challenging a planned mountain top removal coal mine in southwest Virginia.
A&G Coal Corporation of Wise is proposing the 1300-acre Ison Rock Ridge Mine that would operate above three communities:.Andover, Appalachia, and Inman. The Southern Appalachian Mountain Stewards and the Sierra Club have filed a formal administrative challenge with the Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals, and Energy. The groups say the newly-approved permit for the mine does not comply with the requirements of either federal or state surface mining laws. The mine, they say, will foul area waterways and destroy three miles of streams with fill.
