Virginia Tech Researching Bio Oil

Researchers at Virginia Tech have developed methods to stabilize bio mass oils that could be used to put bio gasoline on the market very soon.

Bio Mass is made up of recently living organisms, things like grass or wood and waste products.

Agblevor: Our problem we face is that the oil is acidic, and is viscous, that is it gets very thick with time.

Dr. Foster Agblevor explained that the biological systems engineering researchers were able to control the components that cause this separately.

Agblevor: Our challenge was to make it so stable so that you can distill it, and that’s what we have been able to achieve.

He believes, with funding, it will be possible to develop bio gasoline in three years.

Agblevor: If you get wood or grass, you should be able to bring it to your processing facility, put it at one end and get your gasoline or diesel out of the other end.

The research is funded by the U.S. Department of Energy.
