McDonnell Pushes to Privatize ABC Stores

Governor Bob McDonnell says he will have a detailed proposal for the privatization of the state’s ABC stores in the very near future. Craig Carper reports.

Privatizing the state’s liquor stores has been a priority for Governor Bob McDonnell since his campaign last year.

After months of prep work, McDonnell says his administration will have a definitive proposal by August.

McDonnell:  Thirty-two states do it.  It’s not rocket science.  The only question really is, what’s the best model for Virginia.  I am very hopeful that we can generate significant money from ABC privatization that will go to funding transportation.  We will take some of the best ideas from other states and put those before the citizens and I’m hopeful that we have the possibility of maybe a special session on that and some other related cost-saving measures.

During the gubernatorial campaign, McDonnell offered a dozen ideas to raise money for the state’s overloaded transportation system.  Bringing offshore drilling to Virginia was another one of his key proposals, something that was shot down by President Obama late last month.
