Ten Fatalities Over Memorial Day Weekend

State Police say ten people died over the long Memorial Day weekend, and two more were killed in a fiery tractor trailer crash yesterday on I-85 near South Hill. Charles Fishburne reports.

Two people died when the tractor trailer ran off the road and burst into flames.

Cotten:  When the trooper got there it was a single vehicle tractor trailer that had run off the road.

State Police Sgt. Michelle Cotten.

Cotten:  It struck several trees and caught on fire.  It is confirmed two fatals inside the tractor trailer.

No identities had been released as of late last night.

Meanwhile, State police say of the 10 Memorial Day weekend fatalities three involved motorcycles, six involved automobiles, and none of those victims was wearing a safety belt.  And the final fatality was a pedestrian who wandered across a busy intersection in Newport News.  Officers said alcohol may have been a factor.
