Mixed Reaction To Offshore Drilling Ban
Environmentalists applaud the administration's offshore drilling decision, Governor and Lt. Governor say President went too far; VCU survey says America is split.
It was a surprise. Both sides expected a delay, not an outright cancellation.
Tolbert: We applaud the Obama administration for realizing what we’ve really been saying all along, that oil drilling is a dirty and dangerous business.
J.R. Tolbert, Environment Virginia, echoing many similar comments yesterday, but both the Governor and the Lieutenant Governor said the President had gone too far.
Bolling: This is a reversal of position, that abandons our commitment to develop our offshore energy resources.
Lieutenant Governor Bill Bolling says postponing for study and safety concerns is one thing.
Bolling: But what he appears to have done today is cancel the lease sale altogether.
Those leases are worth millions, and Virginia was first in line to tap into it. But VCU took a survey just after the explosion and spill.
Garman: People are very concerned.
Greg Garman is director of the VCU Center for Environmental Studies, and that survey, released yesterday, indicated a 51% majority now thinks the risks outweigh the benefits.
