McDonnell Withdraws From Race to the Top

This week, Governor Bob McDonnell decided not to apply for round two of the federal Race-to-the-Top grant program. Craig Carper reports.

Though Governor McDonnell has been a strong supporter of President Obama’s Race to the Top program, he said he has serious concerns about common core standards, which every state competing for the grant dollars must comply with.

The Governor says Virginia’s current Standards of Learning or SOL’s, exceed the core standards that the Federal Government is trying to implement.

McDonnell:  Rather than having us adopt a common core set of national standards and really dumbing down some of our own standards, I’d rather have the federal government work with us and kind of reward us for exceeding these common core standards.  What they’ve done in their application process is saying that we essentially will be penalized substantially.

Race to the Top gives incentives to states that excel in education reform and promotes expansion of charter schools and other non-traditional institutions.
