AAA Predicts Return to Virginia Highways This Memorial Day Weekend

AAA predicts travelers will shake off the recession and return to the highways in greater numbers this Memorial Day weekend. Charles Fishburne reports.

AAA says road trips are back.

Van Cauren:  We’re actually expecting Memorial Day travel to rebound this year.

Wendy Van Cauren, AAA.

Van Cauren:  About 7.1 percent more Virginians are travelling this year, close to 941,500 Virginians on the road.

Eighty-seven percent of holiday travel will be by motor vehicle and motorists may even get a break on gasoline prices.

Van Cauren:  Gas prices have been falling during the month of May.  Today in Virginia you’ll find an average of $2.67 per gallon of self-serve regular.  Typically this time of year gas prices are going up but motorists are seeing some relief as they head back.

And State Police say travelers can expect more troopers as part of their annual accident reduction program.  The holiday officially begins tonight at 12:01 and ends midnight Monday.
