Crackdown on Seat-Belt Violators Coming This Weekend
The US Department of Transportation said yesterday there are still 45 million people refusing to use seatbelts, and launched its annual Click It or Ticket program in advance of the holidays. Charles Fishburne reports
Compliance in Virginia is just as bad as the rest of the country, with 18% refusing to buckle up.
Meade: That’s about 1.4 million people.
Martha Meade, AAA, which along with Virginia State Police and DMV will hold a news conference tomorrow to spell out just how many people will be on the road, how many police will be out watching, and there will be renewed efforts to pass out tickets for seat belt violations.
Meade: They will be looking for people who are not buckled up and if they pull them for another primary offense, or even pull them at a checkpoint they will be issuing tickets.
You can’t be stopped for a seat belt violation, so normally there is some impunity. But with increased vigilance for other violations, and routine traffic stops likely, offenders could be caught and fined this time.
Meade: All in an attempt to save lives.
