Baseball Team For Sale

The Generals play in the Coastal Plain League, summer baseball for college students.  They have taken the field in Petersburg for more than ten years.  The Generals have been in the news for all the wrong reasons since 2007.  That’s when the city attorney told council there was no record they had ever formally voted to buy the Generals and called for an investigation into the team.  The investigation came to the same conclusion and noted, according to the Progress Index, that the team had operated for years without transparency, without a specific budget appropriation by the city.  An enterprise fund was created two years ago in anticipation of selling the team.  There was also talk of simply not funding it but, the city discovered, that would have led to a fine by the League greater than the cost of operating the team.  Keeping the team on the field this season, the city believes, will help sustain interest from buyers.
