Prince George Supervisors Okay Shelter
Prince George County supervisors have given their okay to continue planning for a new animal shelter.
Enteros Design, P.C., of Petersburg, outlined plans this week developed with input from a committee that was made up of county officials, veterinarians, and people who live in Prince George. Among other things that committee toured five relatively new shelters in Virginia and North Carolina and checked cost estimates against new shelter construction in Henrico, King George, and Amherst.
The plan supervisors agreed to calls for a nearly 7200 square foot building with 50 dog kennels, that’s ten more than the county has now, and 41 cat cages, 17 more than currently. The new structure is going be put up with durable, low maintenance materials and it includes a number of energy-saving measures. The price tag is $257 per square foot. The county had estimated $1.2 million for the project. The new estimate, that doesn’t include buying land, runs close to $1.9 million.
