Chesterfield Aims To Revitalize Route One

A major push is underway to revitalize one of America’s, and Virginia’s most historic and neglected highways. Charles Fishburne reports.

See if you can guess.  It stretches 2400 miles from Maine to Key West.  Along the way, you’ll find the Bronx Zoo, FBI headquarters, the place where George Washington allegedly chopped down the cherry tree, civil war battlefields, and the Okefenokee Swamp.

Bolling:  There are a lot of beautiful places in Virginia, but to see some of them you have to get off the interstate.

That was our Lt. Governor Bill Bolling, who joined with top Chesterfield officials yesterday to help bring tourists back to a forgotten time and place.

Bolling:  What these folks are trying to do in promoting the Route 1 corridor I think has a great opportunity for tourism in Virginia.

At the Halfway House Restaurant, they rolled out a banner, a welcome sign, new landscaping, along with a website:  www.historicrouteone.com, to invite you back.  And Bolling, the Commonwealth’s job’s czar, reminds us that tourism generates 26,000 jobs in this region.
