Obama delivers Commencement Speech at Hampton University
In his commencement address at Hampton University in Virginia yesterday, President Barack Obama discussed the many challenges facing the nation and how education can help combat them. Craig Carper of member station WCVE reports.
Roughly 1,000 students, and thousands more family members and friends packed into Armstrong Stadium to hear the President give the commencement address. President Obama called on the graduates to serve as role models in their communities and to encourage the pursuit of higher education. The President said this is especially important in minority communities.
Obama: African-Americans are being outperformed by their white classmates, as are Hispanic Americans. Students in well-off areas are outperforming students in poorer rural or urban communities, no matter what skin color. But African-Americans are ranked behind more than 20 nations, lower than nearly every other developed country.
Founded in 1868, Hampton University is one of the nation’s oldest historically-black colleges, with an enrollment of some 6,000 students.
