Governor’s Job Creation Team Holds First Meeting
The first meeting of Governor McDonnell’s Economic Development and Job Creation Commission was held yesterday. Craig Carper Reports.
Lieutenant Governor Bill Bolling presided over the Commission, a part of his duty as Chief Job Creation Officer as appointed by Governor McDonnell.
The 64-member group included elected state representatives, cabinet members, and private sector leaders. After listening to presentations from Bolling, McDonnell’s Senior Economic Advisor Bob Sledd, and former Chair of the Richmond Federal Reserve Al Broadus, among others, commission members broke into sub-groups, including small business, energy, economically-distressed communities, manufacturing and tourism.
After speaking to the Commission and signing several economic development bills, Governor McDonnell said he was certain that the group would produce concrete results.
McDonnell: We have folks here that really represent the best and brightest minds from the public and private sectors of Virginia. They understand, like I do, that getting our people back to work and reducing this unacceptably high 7.4% unemployment rate is the top issue facing our state
The group will be holding meetings over the next several months before presenting the Governor with their final recommendations on October 16th.
