Virginia Strawberries coming in season

Virginia strawberries are ripe and ready for picking.

State agricultural officials say a blanket of snow and a cool spring made the strawberry crop especially good.

Berryman:  It’s a really good quality crop.

Steve Berryman has a pick-your own farm just outside Surry, and he says there is nothing quite like a strawberry right off the vine.

Berryman:  You know it when you bite into it cause it just fills your mouth up with juice and it’s really good flavor.

Martin’s supermarkets had fresh Virginia strawberries yesterday.  Food Lion, Kroger and Walmart are still shipping them in from California and Florida.  State agricultural officials say Virginia strawberries should start to peak around Mother’s Day.  They also suggest you go to www.virginiagrown.com to find a roadside stand, farmers market or pick-your own farm near you.  And call before you go to see what’s available and when.
