UVa Lacrosse Player Charged with Murder

A University of Virginia men’s lacrosse player has been charged in the death of a women’s lacrosse player.

The body of 22-year-old Yeardley Love, of Cockeysville, Maryland, was found in her apartment on 14th Street, N.W.  Police were called just after two yesterday morning. They were told it was a possible alcohol overdose.

Longo:  It was quickly apparent to them that this young lady was the victim of something far worse.

Charlottesville Police Chief Timothy Longo, Sr.

Longo:  There were obvious physical injuries to her body, which prompted them to immediately secure the crime scene.

Detectives and forensic personnel made a number of determinations as the overnight hours passed and a suspect emerged: 22-year-old George Hugeley.

Longo:  By early morning probable cause existed for us to take into custody and obtained a warrant for his arrest.  He has since been charged with first-degree murder.

Witnesses told police Yeardley and Huguely, who is from Chevy Chase, Maryland, had a relationship.  Investigators are anxious, they say, to talk to people who may know what led to the tragic situation early yesterday morning.
