An Outdoor Classroom and Gardens
Students at Linwood Holton Elementary School in north Richmond met former Governor Kaine and his wife Anne Holton at a groundbreaking this week for a new outdoor classroom.
The classroom will be large enough for classes to meet rain or shine, even though it has no walls. Holton parent Susanna Rassenot explained that the work is being done in stages. Phase One includes:
Rassenot: The outdoor classroom, the garden beds, pathways, shed and compost bins. And the gardens and the wildflower meadow and other components will be Phase Two and they will come in as we receive funding.
Another parent, Ellen Shepard, said the students, K-12, are very involved in what’s happening. They are already tending their gardens.
Shepard: We’re fortunate to twelve existing beds and we’ve used those throughout the year and the students have come up with ideas about what their favorite fruits and vegetables are and some of their favorite foods. For example, we’re going to have a pizza garden, all the ingredients that you need to make a pizza.
Parents all had high praise for Holton’s Principal David Hudson, who supported the project with his leadership and the $7500 award he received as Principal of the Year.
