Governor McDonnell Completes Legislation Review

Governor Bob McDonnell has completed his review of all legislation passed by the General Assembly this session.

By his midnight deadline Wednesday Governor McDonnell had signed a total of 749
bills, amended an additional 122 and in a surprising move…vetoed none of the
legislation passed by the General Assembly this year.

Among the significant amendments was a six million dollar increase to the
Governor’s Opportunity Fund, which is used to lure out of state businesses to
relocate to Virginia.

McDonnell also rejected language passed by the General Assembly that would have
allowed localities the option of requiring employees to pay a percentage into their
pension fund.

Finally, the Governor also proposed increasing speeding fines by 1 dollar for each mile per
hour over the speed limit to help pay for some of his new spending initiatives.

The General Assembly must approve the Governor’s amendments during a one day
veto session which will convene next Wednesday.

Governor McDonnell was unavailable for comment yesterday but will hold a press
conference today when he signs a Government reform package into law.
