Race and Religion Panel Meets

A Muslim, a Baptist, a Mormon and VCU’s Chair of Religious Studies will meet tomorrow night to talk about the role of race in religion today.

The question:  is race still a dividing line?

Kinnard:  Back in the 60’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said 11 am on Sunday is the most segregated hour of the week.

Isabelle Kinnard, First Freedom Center, is moderator.

Kinnard:  We’re not talking about 11 am on Sunday anymore.

She says America is more diverse, and in many ways, more divided, even though we might mean well.

Woods:  The kind of framework that’s often used is racial reconciliation.  And, to the extent that that’s about developing better feelings, it’s sort of hard to imagine why that’s a bad thing.

Dr. Mark Wood is Chair of VCU’s Religious Studies.

Wood:  It’s not a guilt thing.  It seems to me that it’s a matter of responsibility.

The panel is ready to take on your questions, public is invited and harmony is guaranteed by the Sixth Mount Zion Baptist Church Choir.  That’s tomorrow night, 7:30-9:00, at the VCU Student Commons, 907 Floyd Avenue.
