State Police Warn about Census Scam Artists

Census forms are in the mail to every household for you to fill out and send it back.  But if you don’t, someone will be knocking at your door, and as Charles Fishburne reports, you need to be sure it is who they say they are.

Virginia State Police say it is an open invitation for scam artists and crooks to gain access to your house.

Geller:  Number one, every census taker -- official census taker -- will have a special identification badge, and you want to make sure to ask to see this badge if somebody comes to your residence stating they are a census taker.

Corinne Geller, Virginia State Police, says they should never ask to enter your home, will never ask for credit card or banking information and are not allowed to interview anyone 15 or younger.

Geller:  If you have any concerns about the identity or the legitimacy of that person you can call the regional census office for Virginia and all the information, of course, is on the census website.

The telephone number is 704-936-5300…or the website is 2010.census.gov.
