Group Encourages Young Latinos to Enter College
A group organized to encourage more young Latinos to pursue a college education will meet in Richmond on Friday and Saturday.
The group’s annual conference is being held at Virginia State University.
Mejia: Valhen is the Virginia Latino Higher Education Network. It is the only statewide non-profit organization serving as a networking structure to promote and support and advocate, really, on behalf of Latino success and advancement in higher education.
Judy Mejia, Secretary of the Valhen Board, explained that this year is special.
Mejia: We launching our first scholarship, we have awarded our first recipient this year. She’ll be announced at the Encuentr, you know, conference. We had over 67 applicants, many from the high schools.
The winner is Mirella Saldaña-Moreno, a freshman at George Mason. Speakers at the conference include VSU’s outgoing President Eddie Moore and his wife Alicia, who is Latina, Dr. Carlos Campo, President of Regent University and Dr. Deborah Santiago, who directs Excelencia in Education in Washington DC.
