Fatal Fire was Accidental

Chesterfield officials say a fire that killed a 2-year old boy was accidental, but investigators are still trying to determine the cause. 

The boy’s mother was in another part of the house when she heard the smoke alarm go off .

Elmore:  She heard it, went to try to rescue and wasn’t able to get back to where the child was and had to evacuate.  In the process she was injured.

Elmore:  The boy, we got to him, and transported him to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The boy’s mother was listed in stable condition late yesterday in the burn ward at MCV Medical Center.  The boy’s name has not been released pending positive identification, but that could come today. 

It happened late Monday in the Hunting Creek Hills subdivision off Salem Church Road.
