State Police Arrest 7000 during Enforcement Period

Virginia State Police say they made over 7,000 traffic citations on I-95 and I-81 last weekend as they cracked down on motorists disobeying the law.

It was the first Operation Air Land and Speed for 2010, as Virginia State police stopped reckless drivers, speeders and seat belt violators along the two major interstates, border to border.

Geller:  State Police stopped a total of 3500 plus speeders, 717 reckless drivers and 20 drunk drivers.

Corinne Geller, Virginia State Police.

Geller:  In addition they cited 310 safetybelt violations and made 35 drug and felony arrests.

It was the 13th Operation of its kind along the two interstates, and police say their added visibility does cut down on accidents and fatalities.

Geller:  There aren't traffic fatalities on either interstate during the initiative, which is really what it’s all about, making our roads safer.
