Henrico Keeps Box Plant Saves 150 Jobs

Henrico County has announced that Smurfit-Stone Container Corporation will remain in the county, consolidating its two plants into one state-of-the-art facility.

Smurfit-Stone currently has two plants and 300 employee operating near the airport.  Henrico could have lost all of it but instead will save 150 jobs and see a new facility with bigger and better equipment to survive in today’s economy.

McLaren:  The fact that we won a consolidation project there’s an awful lot of excess capacity in this country, as you know.

Gary McLaren, Executive Director of the Henrico Economic Development Authority.

McLaren:  More and more you are seeing companies begin to rationalize what they are gonna keep up and what they are going to sell.  To the degree we were able to win this, it bodes well for the county of Henrico has enjoyed a very positive business climate for a long time.  Yeah, we had some hits recently, but I think you’re gonna see Henrico come out of this recession as strong as we ever would.

The new plant could go in the Enterprise Zone with state incentives and the county will fast-track their permit process that could get them up and running by summer.
