Virginia Agricultural Exports Among Top 10 in U.S.

In 2009 Virginia agricultural exports ranked the state among the top ten farm and forestry exporters in the country.

Gov. Bob McDonnell released the numbers in Norfolk at the start of the second International Virginia Agricultural Trade Conference that will run through today.  State agricultural exports hit $2.3 BILLION last year, a five per cent increase over the year before, ranking Virginia ninth nationally in farm exports.  The Commonwealth was 11th in 2008.

The top destination for Virginia agricultural products is Canada: $198 million worth, followed by China’s $169 million.  Other countries importing Virginia soybeans, wheat, corn, barley, leaf tobacco, meat, poultry and wood products include Morocco, Indonesia, Turkey, and Switzerland.
