Petersburg Approves More Billboards
Petersburg City Council has narrowly approved changes in city’s sign regulations.
The vote was 4-3 on changes that will permit more billboards to be put up along I-95 and Route 460. That’ll mean more billboards within the city, but only in a very limited area. The signs can only be put up on property that is zoned commercial or industrial, and they have to face either the interstate or the highway. They can’t be located within 500 feet of an area that is zoned residential.
Finally, City Manager David Canada explained the new boards can only go up when an old one comes down somewhere else in Petersburg. The new and often controversial electronic billboards are allowed under the changed regulations. Some people at the meeting told Council they thought this was moving along too quickly and wanted more discussion; others, many of them business owners, spoke in favor of the changes.
